Why does anyone ever need to clean their Windows PC registry? What IS the registry of your computer?
Without going into too much technical detail explaining what the registry is as that discussion can easily take a full semester long college course to thoroughly understand, it is essentially the road map for your computer every time it starts and every time it wants to perform an action. It tells your computer what to do when certain actions are performed, where to go, what files to invoke, and what order to do things. Without this essential part of the Windows Operating System, your Windows PC would be dead in the water.
So why do we need to clean it periodically? As users, we are constantly making changes to how we ask the computer perform certain actions. Every time we install a program, every time we uninstall a program, every time we make changes to settings in applications, every time we run updates, every time we do pretty much ANYTHING on the computer, it makes changes and adjustments to the registry. What ends up happening over time, the registry will accumulate directions that are either obsolete or lead to programs that don’t exist anymore. Going back to the road map metaphor, you will end up with a lot of dead ends.
Now imagine if you were the computer and decide to go through the registry and following every path in that registry. How long do you think things will take to get done when every time you are asked to do something you have to go down the path of every dead end direction before you get to where you want to go? Now granted, as a computer you are pretty darn fast, but imagine having to go down through hundreds of thousands of dead end paths JUST to startup.
Yup, you got it…you are now a SLOW computer.
Well, no worries! If you are already a Make It Work customer, you can check your desktop for your MIW Utilities folder and find the shortcut to the application called CCleaner.
If you don’t have that program already, you can download it here. (Installation is one of the fastest out there… I believe you can do it in under a minute.)
CCleaner is a great tool, it not only does a good job with your registry, it can also be used to clear out your junk files and cache on your computer as well as uninstall more efficiently than windows itself. (Have you ever noticed that the more programs you have, the longer it takes windows to populate that “Add/Remove Programs” window? CCleaner populates almost immediately.)
So assuming that you now have CCleaner open, you will see a list of icons on the left hand side. Click on the one labeled Registry.
You will then see two buttons on the lower right hand area of the application. Click on Scan for Issues to begin the scan. The progress bar on top will show you the progress and depending on how “dirty” your registry is, the time will vary.
When it is done, you will then click on Fix selected issues…
By default, all the issues found will be checked. Unless you read registry entries for a living, then the issues listed will look like gibberish initially so just leave them all checked. However, if really want to know what you are cleaning then much like in the movie The Matrix, if you stare at registry entries long enough and read them line by line…things WILL actually start to make sense.
In any case, upon clicking the button to start fixing, a pop up window will ask if you want to backup your registry. That’s always a good idea. I recommend creating a special folder just for that. Should the computer stop working as a result of a new program installation or virus attack, then a backup registry can be really helpful in restoring your computer back to operating state.
The next window asks if you want to fix the issue. Just click the Fix… button and away it goes!
Now here is something that most people don’t realize. When you clean the registry, it often exposes more “dead ends” after the first cleaning. I often go through this process a few more times until all registry issues are resolved and the scan comes back clean.
Reboot the computer for good measure and it should be running more efficiently than before!
To summarize:
1. Make sure you have CCleaner
2. Click on Registry icon on the left side
3. Click on Scan For Issues on the lower right hand side
4. Click on Fix selected issues…
5. Backup your registry
6. Confirm to Fix the registry issues
7. Repeat as necessary
Happy Cleaning!
